Projects

The Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum granted five technical corporation permits to Africa Geodata, namely TCP12/2/243, TCP12/2/244, TCP12/2/245 TCP12/2/246 and TCP12/2/247. The permits give Africa Geodata the exclusive right to perform desktop studies for the exploration of hydrocarbons (oil and gas) and subsequently apply for an exploration right/s over the areas held.

Location of Technical Corporation Permits granted to Africa Geodata.
Neighbouring operators proved a petroleum system exists with potentially large gas resources very recently, possibly contingent resources exceeding 6tcf in their rights alone. With news of production of gas and helium recently realised and ramping up, the onshore Karoo Basin appears to be prospective for further gas and helium finds. Reservoirs discovered are conventional sandstone reservoirs, not shale gas or coal bed methane (CBM), although potential may exist to tap into the coal beds for the CBM reserves. The gas-bearing reservoirs discovered are very likely to extend into TCP areas held by Africa Geodata.

Karoo Geology
It is postulated that the gas produced is sourced from in-situ coal layers, but interspersed black shales and the deeper Pietermaritzburg formation may also be potential source intervals. The intrusion of dolerite during the Jurassic appears to have a sealing effect on gas accummulations discovered recently. Conventional reservoirs do not require hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to stimulate production. The main target reservoirs are the lower Permian Vryheid Formation, overlying the Pietermaritzburg Formation in the more southerly areas and overlying directly on Dwyka and basement in the extreme North of the Basin.
